These ideas were great and many state and local governments offered incentives for people to install these ideas on their homes and businesses. Many companies jumped on the bandwagon and started manufacturing and installing these products but have since gone out of business or just don't offer service to their original customers.

Robert Craig of D & R Energy Services states, "In talking with our clients we saw a need to offer complete restoration services for the older 1980's Air-Walls. Many of these units are still working but in need of major repair and very few companies offer service for them." Robert goes on to say, "A broken pane of glass or rotted wood can cause an air leak that drives down the unit's efficiency and leaves your home open to cold air entry."

Solar Air-Walls are a very simple product that heats your home by using the sun. Air is pulled from the inside of your house by a fan and pushed into the Air-Wall. As the air heats it rises and exits out into your room with the help of the same fan system. The outside of the system is usually many two foot square panes of glass that capture the suns heat and can heat air to over 100 degrees, making your furnace work less and use less fuel.

"Most Air-Wall systems were installed in the early to mid 80's and time is now taking its toll. Technology has changed a lot in 25 plus years too and we can rebuild these units with better materials so they will work for many more years to come." states Melissa Bray, Senior Consultant with D & R Energy.

If you have an Air-Wall or any other Renewable Energy system that is in need of repair, or you are just looking for more information about Sustainable Energy, contact D & There is so much to do, how are we going to get it all done? Yes there is a lot to do with installing a solar system on your home or business, but one nice thing is your solar contractor does most of the work for you.

Contacting an Installer/Contractor:
You have been hearing so many good things about going with a solar system. How much money you can save and how you can help save our precious natural resources for our future generations. Where do you turn to find answers? First thing to do is find a reputable solar installer. The best way to find a solar installer/contractor is the internet. Try and find at least two companies to come out and visit with you. When choosing which installer to talk with, look at how many years they have been in Renewable Energy and ask them how many installs they have completed and what types.

Site Assessment:
The first thing that any installer needs is one year’s worth of electricity bills so they can determine what size system is right for you. They will also need to look at your roof to make sure there is room there to install enough panels. Does the roof face south or what are the conditions of your roof? If there is not enough room then they should be able to give you options as to what would be the size that would fit or if a ground mounted system would work. The installer will also need to look at the possibility of shading issues that could affect the output of your system. Trees, a chimney or even other roof areas will cause shading.

Incentive Applications
Also when the contractor is at your home or business they should explain any and all incentives and tax credits that are available to you. They should also offer to help you fill out any applications that there may be with any incentive based rebate. If your contractor does not offer this information to you, you may want to contact another company for your Renewable Energy system. The contractor should also explain about the Net Metering Law and how it works for you.

Proposal
Contractors should provide you with a formal proposal as to what the cost of the system will be and what equipment they plan to install. This proposal should also include any incentives and tax credits that are available.

Design & Engineering
The contractor should provide you with design as to where your system will be placed on your roof, or ground if there is not enough room there. This should be supplied to you when they submit the proposal to you.

Contract
Once you have chosen a contractor then they will most likely submit a contract for you to sign. Please read this carefully and if you have questions or don’t understand something, then ask the contractor to explain. Understanding the contract could possibly save you money and pain in the long run.

Ordering of Equipment
After the contract is signed your equipment will be ordered. A shipping date will be established and an install date will be scheduled with you. Most work will take place outside your home or business. There will need to be access to your breaker panel so someone will need to be available for the electrician to hang the inverter and tie into your panel.

Equipment Arrival
Equipment will normally arrive to the warehouse or job site in about 7 to 10 business days after order is placed. Inspection is done to ensure that all equipment has been received and in install condition. Installation usually begins a few days after.

Permits
The contractor usually obtains permits and bills for these separately as each municipality is different in pricing.

Day of Install
The day has arrived and the install crew is busy on your roof putting in racking (for the panels to bolt to) and installing panels. Depending on the size of the system, install can take anywhere from two days to a week. Wiring is connected to the panels and dropped for the electrician to begin tie in.

Final Paperwork
After the install is complete and inspections are done, final paperwork is completed for any incentives and tax credits there may be. The contractor should have this paperwork all ready for you to sign and send in.

Your System
You now have your Renewable Energy system. Your system will give you many, many years of trouble free service and you can now watch your electric bill shrink.

Educating the consumer is our goal at D & R Energy Services

Visit our Website at www.drenergyservices.com to learn more.

D & Imagine a cold crisp winter day and inside your home its toasty warm. You have not heard the furnace, or boiler, run. The gas bill came in the mail a few days ago and you smile to yourself knowing that this time last year you were paying double or maybe triple this amount. Now it’s time for a shower and get dressed for the day, again you smile knowing that your hot water is not going to take money out of your pocket. Even doing the laundry and washing dishes won’t make a dent in your wallet. Does this sound too good to be true? Well it’s not thanks to Solar Energy.

Up on your roof is a series of solar collectors that capture the heat from the sun and convert it to heating your hot water. A set of coils in your hot water tank are connected to these collectors and a heat conducting food grade glycol circulates, transferring this heat energy. If you have radiant floor heat and a boiler system then a set of coils would be connected to another holding tank that is connected to your boiler. This tank preheats the water for your boiler so it doesn’t have to work as hard burning gas to heat the house.

In as little as two days a thermal system can be installed on your home and you could start saving money. A team of two installers and a Mater Plumber are all that is needed. These highly trained personal work with your busy schedule so there is minimal amount of time needed to disrupt your life.

What does this all mean to you? A smaller gas bill each and every month for the next 25 plus years. With the money you save on your gas bill, you could pay off a Solar Thermal system in as little as five to six years (without incentives or tax credits). Add on these credits and incentives and your return on your investment drops even quicker.

Written by Robert Craig, Senior Engineer for D & Here are a few things to help you understand.
Did you know you could add value to your home even in these tough economic times? Imagine adding more money to your pocket if you decide to sell. Even Realtors agree that Solar PV (Photovoltaic) adds to the value and makes it easier to market and sell your home.

Many people ask how much money a solar system will cost. There is no standard answer to this question; it's like buying a new car. What options would you like to have? You can buy a "striped down" model or go all out. All depends on how much money you would like to spend on the options you want.

Solar PV systems can be designed to the amount of electricity you want to offset each month. If you would like to see a 50% offset then your monthly bill would be approximately half of what you’re paying. Most consumers want to offset by 100% if possible and this can be done with no problem if you have enough space to install panels. Your installer can determine this for you very easily.

Incentives and credits play a big role in the cost of a solar system. The current Federal Tax Credit (30%) could save you $3,000.00 or much more off your system (cost of materials and installation). This credit is taken on your income taxes at the end of the year. If your tax burden is not enough to take this whole credit at once, it can roll over to the next year or out to as long as 2016.
Many utility's and states offer additional incentives and rebates to further reduce the cost of your system. Many times when you add up all credits, incentives and rebates the system cost is zero. That's right, zero. See your solar installer for all the details.

Net metering is another way to reduce the amount of money you pay each month to your local utility. Most states have adopted a Net Metering Law. This is where your electric utility installs a new digital meter on your home or business that can count backwards. Yes, backwards. As you produce power from your solar system it is run through this meter. During the day as you make electricity, any excess that you don’t use is sent up onto the grid. This power then makes the meter count backwards so that you build credits.
At night when you can’t produce electricity and have to take it off the grid, you use some of the credits you built up during the day. One nice thing is, you don’t normally use as much power during the night time because you sleep for most of it. Then everything starts all over again in the morning, 365 days a year.
During the summer months you will build up more credits and these credits roll over month to month and year to year. Yes it is true that you may not produce as much energy during the winter months because of the amount of day light time available. On the other hand, in the Northern areas of the country that have snow, you can produce more power in one crisp clear winter day then on a cloudless summer day in July.

Many people see adding solar to their home as having strangers running in and out all day for weeks on end. That is not the case with solar. Most residential installs only take 3 days to complete and only require 1 person in your home. All other personal are outside your home on the roof or working in your yard, in the case of a ground mount system. A solar PV install is much cleaner on your home then standard renovations.
If you would like more information about solar PV or an analysis to see how much you can offset your electrical usage, contact your local Solar Installer and see what solar can do for you.

Renewable Energy Services

We at D & R Energy Services, Inc. are a Renewable Systems Developer and Integrator. During this time we also look at your past 12 months of electric bills to see what your usage is and make recommendations as to how you may be able to save money on your utility bills. Also by knowing what your yearly usage is, we can accurately size a Renewable Energy system to fit your needs. We will also explain in detail any and all tax credits and/or incentives that are available to you.

Let us help you make an informed decision about your Renewable Energy needs. Contact us today to schedule your free, no obligation site analysis. Or if you just have questions, our staff will be happy to answer any and all via phone, email or the contact page on our website.

Contact us at any of the type='text'>The Pettibone Creek Hydroelectric Restoration Plan

The Pettibone Creek Hydroelectric Station Milford Michigan
Phase II Hydroelectric Restoration Plan 2009

History

All of Henry Ford’s Village Industries were built where water power existed and had been used by early settlers. Ford improved the waterpowers in each case, but Milford’s site was unique. Here a flume or penstock (4-foot diameter steel pipe) was buried under ground and laid across the Upper and Lower Mill Pond beds, traveling almost 2/3 of a mile to the hydroelectric plant on Liberty Street. Ford took advantage of the topography and also built a dam on Moore Lake, creating the 50-foot headwater that powered the generators.

Once inside the building, the 48 inch diameter pipe is split to feed two hydraulic turbines in the basement. A shaft then connected each turbine to a generator located directly above on the main level. The two generators were rated at 75 and 62.5 KVA. When synchronized with the other hydro plant Ford built on the Huron River, the power was distributed to the manufacturing plant via underground cables across the lower mill pond. Both hydroelectric could be operated from the control room in the carburetor plant.

What we want to do

We at D & R Energy Services Inc. and the Powerhouse Restoration Committee want to bring back the grandeur of the Pettibone Creek Hydroelectric Station to its full potential. Just think of supplying electricity to light Central Park at night. How about helping power the Well House and maybe the Iron Removal Plant too? This could mean a potential savings of $80,000.00 per year to the village of Milford. Maybe just for fun we light 13,333 60w light bulbs. This can be a reality that is obtainable.

Originally, the station contained two vertical, Francis type turbines, one 75 KW and one 62.5 KW capacity, manufactured by the James Leffel Company. We have contacted James Leffel Company and working with their engineering staff, plan to install one generator rated for 100KW capacity. The new generator will be located in the lower level keeping the main level open.

Most of the original controls are still located on site and we plan to integrate the new with the old. Original equipment needs to be restored and will take time. New controls will be housed in the old cabinets to keep the look and feel of 1939. Possibly in the future remote monitoring can be installed and anyone with internet can see how much electricity the hydro plant is producing day or night.

How we can do it

In Phase I, many hours were dedicated to restoring the architecture of this treasure of Michigan’s Past.
You can help in Phase II of the restoration dream – once again producing electricity from the power of Milford’s waters. Not only will there be a need of financial support but also help with making ready for the generator.

If you would like to help, please feel free to visit www.milfordhistory.org or www.milfordpowerhouse.com. Preservation Grants
• Local business support
• Community support
By utilizing these three sources of financial revenue and professional skill Phase I of the projecgts has been completed.

Now it’s time to chip away at the rest of the plan.

You can be a part of Milford’s history and restoration of the Pettibone Creek Hydroelectric Station in a number of ways:
• The Energy Efficiency Exchange hopes to facilitate and implement energy efficiency projects for the industrial sector. During this event, we spoke with those presenting available financial and technical resources from federal, regional, state, and non-governmental sources. The Exchange also provides a venue for those with resources to help lower regional industrial energy intensity and related carbon emissions. Industry is a vital component of the Midwest’s economy, as it accounts for 4 million jobs and 16 percent of the region’s Gross Domestic Product. It also accounts for 35 percent of regional energy consumption and 16 percent of carbon emissions.

2009 Chrysler Arts, Beats & Eats: September 4th-7th 2009

2009 Chrysler Arts, Beats & Eats
September 4th-7th 2009.
Downtown Pontiac MI 48342

Please join us as we will be having a booth set up informing everyone about renewable energy!

http://www.artsbeatseats.com/

House Republican Jobs Taskforce, August 21st

House Republican Jobs Taskforce

August 21st 2009
Livingston Educational Service Agency (LESA)
Building in Howell, Michigan

The House Republican Strategic Task Force on Jobs was created to address this crisis and put forth a plan of action to change our future. As the event grew and expanded, it included demonstrations, information and research highlights for all growers.
Under the leadership of the MSU Department of Agricultural Engineering and with input from many producer groups and MSU departments and organizations, the event moved to its current location on the south side of the MSU campus in 1979.

Today, the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources hosts a show that features exhibitors from 35 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces on the 40-acre site, as well as on-site demonstrations and side-by-side equipment test drives. Educational exhibitors from across the college and the university extend MSU's vast resources to the people of Michigan

For more information please see:
http://www.agexpo.msu.edu/

Detroit Edison Plans Electric Hike

Increase Could Appear On August's Bill

Associated Press
2:10 PM CDT, June 26, 2009

Detroit Edison Co. plans to raise average monthly residential electric bills by $1.25.Michigan's largest utility said Friday the increase would appear on August bills, though regulators have until July 26 to weigh in.Utilities can increase power bills on their own if the Michigan Public Service Commission doesn't act within six months of a rate request being filed. Refunds with interest must be paid if regulators decide a utility charged too much.Edison plans to raise rates temporarily until January while waiting for regulators to act on a bigger rate proposal.Residents could pay $7 more per month than now depending on what regulators allow, though Edison now said it's asking for less because of savings in operations and lower fuel costs.

Michigan gets $32.8 million to cut energy usage

Updated at 4:20 p.m.

Michigan will receive $32.8 million in federal grants to reduce energy consumption in homes and businesses, U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced Monday.

That’s part of $82 million the state will receive overall for energy programs under the federal stimulus plan.

Chu, who visited Battle Creek, said Michigan will use the money to help reduce energy consumption in public buildings by 20% by 2012, and create new markets for renewable energy systems, particularly wind energy.

The grant will pay for energy audits of 500 homes and businesses, conducted by the state’s two largest utilities, DTE and Consumers Energy. That's the nation I want America to be."

View the full story here.

Brighton Business Expo Friday, June 5, 2009

Come visit the D & R Energy Services booth at the Brighton Business Expo!

Date: Friday, June 5, 2009
Time: 6:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Location: Brighton Ford-Mercury
8240 W. Secretary Chu also announced more than $100 million in funding from the Recovery Act for NREL facility and infrastructure improvements.

The funding will leverage the Department of Energy's national laboratories, universities, and the private sector to help improve reliability and overcome key technical challenges for the wind industry. These projects will create green jobs, promote economic recovery, and provide the investments needed to increase renewable energy generation.

"Wind energy will be one of the most important contributors to meeting President Obama's target of generating 10 percent of our electricity from renewable sources by 2012," said Secretary Chu. "The projects funded by this opportunity will advance wind technology so that it can reliably supply a substantial portion of our nation's electricity. They will also help in creating more new jobs and expanding a clean energy economy.

$45 million for wind turbine drivetrain R&D and testing

DOE will provide $45 million directed toward enhancing the federal government's ability to support the wind industry through testing the performance and reliability of current and next generation wind turbine drivetrain systems.

This investment will deliver dependable and cost effective hardware for utility scale wind turbines with over a 20 year design life. Overall, this project will help to improve the country's competitiveness in wind energy technology, lower capital costs of wind systems, and maintain a high level of wind energy capacity growth.

$14 million for technology development

To strengthen its support of the wind industry, DOE will make available $14 million to advance technology development in the private sector. This effort will aim to improve the quality and use of lighter weight, advanced materials for turbine blades, towers, and other components. Another area of emphasis will be process controls for lamination, blade finishing, trimming, grind, painting, materials handling and inspection.

$24 million for wind power research and development

DOE will provide $24 million for the development of up to three consortia between universities and industry to focus on critical wind energy challenges. These partnerships will allow universities to establish research and development programs to advance material design, performance measurements, analytical models, and work with the industry to improve power systems operations, maintenance and repair, and component manufacturing.

$10 million for National Wind Technology Center

DOE will invest $10 million at its own National Wind Technology Center in Colorado. This funding will enhance the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's ability to support the wind industry through testing current and next generation wind turbine drive train systems for better performance and reliability. Additionally, upgrades to the electrical distribution system will permit cost recovery of the power produced by two new utility-scale wind turbines being installed there for testing and evaluation.

Additionally, under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory will receive:

$68 million for Research Support Facility

This project will create the nation's most energy efficient office building at the same cost of low efficiency commercial construction today. It will achieve LEED Platinum and 50% energy use reduction over standard commercial office buildings. The goal is to create a design process that can be replicated by future construction projects.

$19.2 million for Renewable Energy and Site Infrastructure

Will use solar and potentially geothermal and fuel cells to replace power currently purchased from utilities and reduce our carbon use.

$13.5 million for upgrades to the Integrated Biorefinery Research Facility

New funding will create a continuous process research and development capability to develop commercial scale cellulose to ethanol technologies. It will also accelerate the development of commercially viable conversion processes.

Wind energy is among the fastest growing energy technologies in the United States. The U.S. now leads the world in wind energy generation and has led the globe in new wind energy capacity installations for the past four years. Last year, wind energy accounted for 42 percent of all new energy generation capacity in the United States. In 2008, DOE published the 20% Wind Energy by 2030 report which examines the technical feasibility of using wind energy to generate 20 percent of the nation's electricity demand by 2030.

Green jobs can help boost economy

The Hill, a Washington newspaper, today ran the following column from Senator Stabenow as part of their Earth Day special edition. Senator Stabenow lays out her plan for energy and climate legislation that will be focused on creating new jobs and revitalizing our economy.

Green jobs can help boost economy

By Senator Debbie Stabenow

My state of Michigan is home to some of the most beautiful natural wonders you will ever see. Of course, we are surrounded by the Great Lakes, the largest freshwater system on Earth. We are also home to some of the most breathtaking vistas in the world, from the Sleeping Bear Dunes on the coast of Lake Michigan to the Pictured Rocks on the coast of Lake Superior. People from Michigan understand the importance of protecting our environment. It is so central to who we are, it might as well be in our DNA.

We are also in the midst of a terrible economic crisis. Michigan has felt the pain of this economic crisis far longer than any other state. Our unemployment continues to be the highest in the nation, a dubious distinction we have held for 34 months.

This Earth Day, as we consider new policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we need to create a workable solution that will protect the environment and create much-needed jobs.

We cannot sit back and do nothing. Our economy cannot move forward while chained to the same old dependence on foreign oil and pollution that harms both our health and economic interests.

If we approach this issue in the right way, we have a significant opportunity to create new jobs and spark an economic transformation. Our climate policy must work for the working people in this country, whether they are farmers, manufacturers, or clean-technology engineers.

Happily, with new energy solutions come new jobs and new industries. America has always led the world in innovation and invention, and we can do it again with clean energy. Yet, the economic crisis has made it harder than ever for firms creating those technologies to get financing. Unfortunately, traditional lenders are wary of making investments in untested new technologies.

That is why the federal government must be willing to support these emerging industries. I have joined with Senator Jeff Bingaman in calling for a Clean Energy Fund to provide financing for these cutting-edge industries. The Senate version of the budget included this fund, and it will likely be included in the energy bill we will take up later this year.

A Clean Energy Fund is absolutely critical so that we do not trade a dependence on foreign oil for a dependence on foreign technology.

Is there any wonder that as manufacturing jobs have vanished, so too has our middle class?

Other countries are investing heavily in green technology. Unfortunately, the United States has been behind the curve. The good news is that we are beginning to catch up - the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act included $2 billion for advanced battery research and manufacturing; it also included a new tax credit to encourage the manufacture of renewable energy products. Those are the kinds of investments we need to continue making to help create a clean energy future while also saving and creating manufacturing jobs in America.

A balanced energy policy can revitalize America's manufacturing sector, creating good-paying jobs and strengthening our middle class.

A wind turbine contains over 8,000 individual parts: nacelles, rotors, rotor blades, gearboxes, brakes, generators, yaw mechanisms, electronic controllers, hydraulics systems, cooling units, towers, anemometers - even simple wind vanes. Why not build those right here in America? In fact, we can! I am proud to say we can build all 8,000 parts in Michigan.

We cannot just use green technologies; we have to make them in the United States. Recent history has shown what happens when we rely primarily on foreign sources of energy: we subject ourselves to less-than friendly international governments who can manipulate supplies to increase prices and hurt the American people. If they can do it with oil, they can do it with wind turbines. First, reduce our use of energy as much as possible. Then, switch to renewable sources of power where it makes economic sense. And, over time, as a last resort, offset the emissions we can't avoid."
~Rupert Murdoch

"The use of solar energy has not been opened up because the oil industry does not own the sun."
~Ralph Nader

"We want a national emissions trading scheme, the Government does not and has rejected one for years. We want to boost the mandatory renewable energies target, the Government has failed to do that. We want a national demand side management strategy for the country to reduce electricity consumption and the Government, up until now, has done very little on that score."
~Kevin Rudd

"If we get the right kind of energy, there are endless amounts. I think we should be developing every kind of alternative fuel that is available to us. That includes hydrogen to soybeans, from solar to wind. Take any given space of the earth's surface— for instance, Illinois; and all the power exerted by all the men, and beasts, and running-water, and steam, over and upon it, shall not equal the one hundredth part of what is exerted by the blowing of the wind over and upon the same space. And yet it has not, so far in the world's history, become proportionably valuable as a motive power. It is applied extensively, and advantageously, to sail-vessels in navigation. Add to this a few windmills, and pumps, and you have about all. ... As yet, the wind is an untamed, and unharnessed force; and quite possibly one of the greatest discoveries hereafter to be made, will be the taming, and harnessing of it."
~Abraham Lincoln
Lecture 'Discoveries and Inventions', (1860) in Discoveries and Inventions (1915).

Have you checked out the Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency lately?

Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency
Federal Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency include

- Tax Credits for Consumers
* Tax credits are available at 30% of the cost, up to $1,500, in 2009 & 2010 (for existing homes only) for:
+ Windows and Doors
+ Insulation
+ Roofs (Metal and Asphalt)
+ HVAC
+ Water Heaters (non-solar)
+ Biomass Stoves
* Tax credits are available at 30% of the cost, with no upper limit through 2016 (for existing homes & new construction) for:
+ Geothermal Heat Pumps
+ Solar Panels
+ Solar Water Heaters
+ Small Wind Energy Systems
+ Fuel Cells
Check out Energystar.gov

Tax Breaks for Businesses, Utilities, and Governments
Includes information on Renewable Energy Incentives
Check out Energy.gov

Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency

DSIRE is a comprehensive source of information on state, local, utility, and federal incentives that promote renewable energy and energy efficiency.
